All Airstrip Reports
We flew down here today to replace the wind sock that was all but completely gone. There was surprising amount of snow in the area but the strip was clear and dry. It was a bit soft as is normal this time of year, especially with recent moisture on it. Still dry enough to kick dust up when landing and taking off. In a few weeks I'm sure it will be firming up. We replaced the wind sock. FYI, if you need to replace the sock, you'll need a large crescent wrench as well as some channel locks and a rope to manage the cantilever design of the pole. It's a large bolt...probably 1.5".
On this day we flew one of the rec planners from the Price District around to survey the airstrips in his district. Hidden Splendor is in great shape although the windsock badly needs to be replaced. Make sure to bring a big crescent wrench or sockets (1.5 or 2") is my guess. It's not standard and is likely larger than anything one would normal carry with them. Check out the pics attached.
We over flew this strip during our survey flight with one of the rec planners from the Price District. After several low passes, another pilot in our group in a C180 with 850s rolled the western half of the runway. He reported that it should be doable with 850s or larger and that it was in decent shape. There is also a stretch of road just south of the strip looked like a viable option for landing to gain access to walk the strip if needed. The road is regularly maintained and well graded. We plan on getting back down there to land it and get a better assessment...and do a little brush clean up as needed. Moonshine wash is about a mile east of here and this strip should provide access to some great slot canyon hiking.
